Choosing a flash can be confusing. There are speedlights, studio strobes, different power levels, TTL and manual operation, wireless systems, battery options, and compatibility requirements for different camera systems. If it was easy, you wouldn’t really need this flash buying guide.
But the good news is that you don’t need to understand every specification to know how to choose a flash, and the right one at that.
The best flash for you depends on what you photograph, where you work, and how you plan to use artificial light. A compact speedlight can be perfect for travel or events, while portrait photographers working with large modifiers may need considerably more power.
In this guide, I’ll explain the main things to consider before buying a flash, including power, TTL and manual operation, recycling time, batteries, wireless control, compatibility, and the differences between speedlights and larger strobes.
I won’t recommend specific models. Instead, we’ll focus on the features and specifications that matter, along with the major flash brands and ecosystems you should know about. That way, the guide can remain useful even as individual products change.

What Type of Flash Do You Need?
Before comparing features, decide what type of flash makes sense for the way you photograph. There are three main categories worth considering: speedlights, larger battery-powered flashes, and studio strobes.
Speedlights
Speedlights are the small flashes designed primarily for use on a camera’s hot shoe, although most models can also be used off-camera as well.
They’re compact, relatively affordable, and easy to carry, making them a good choice for events, weddings, travel, street photography, and photographers who need a portable lighting setup.
Their main limitation is power. They can handle many portrait and event situations, but you’ll reach their limits sooner when working with large modifiers, greater distances, or bright ambient light.
Larger Battery-Powered Flashes
These sit between traditional speedlights and studio strobes.
They are usually larger and more powerful than speedlights, but still have built-in batteries and don’t require a wall outlet. Many are designed specifically for off-camera use and can provide considerably more power and faster recycling.
They’re particularly useful for portrait photographers, outdoor shoots, and anyone who wants substantial flash power without giving up portability.
If you regularly use large modifiers or need to compete with sunlight, this category can be a very practical middle ground.
Studio Strobes
Studio strobes are larger flashes designed primarily for controlled environments, mostly working with cords plugged into wall outlets.
They’re generally more powerful and better suited to extended studio sessions, although battery-powered studio strobes have made it increasingly practical to use them outdoors as well.
They’re a good choice when power, consistency, and a full lighting setup matter more than keeping your equipment small.
Which One Should You Buy?
For most beginners, a speedlight is a good place to start if portability and budget are important.
If you’re primarily interested in portrait photography and off-camera lighting, a larger battery-powered flash may make more sense, particularly if you expect to use large modifiers. This was my start, and where I still am today.
For dedicated studio work, a studio strobe can give you the power and performance you’ll eventually need.
There isn’t a universally best type of flash. The right choice is the one that gives you enough power and features for the way you actually plan to shoot.

How Much Flash Power Do You Need?
Flash power is one of the most important things to consider when buying a flash. But bigger isn’t always better. The amount of power you need depends on your shooting distance, aperture, ISO, ambient light, and the size of your modifier.
Understanding Guide Numbers
Flash power is often described using a guide number (GN). A higher guide number generally means a more powerful flash.
However, guide numbers aren’t always directly comparable between brands. Manufacturers may measure them at different zoom settings and ISO values, so don’t use the number alone to decide which flash is more powerful.
It’s better to look at the complete specifications and, more importantly, think about how you’ll actually use the light.
Understanding Watt-Seconds (Ws)
Larger flashes and studio strobes are often rated in watt-seconds (Ws) rather than, or in addition to, guide numbers.
Watt-seconds describe the amount of electrical energy stored in the flash’s capacitor and released during a flash. In general, a higher Ws rating means more potential output.
However, watt-seconds aren’t a direct measurement of how much light reaches your subject. Different flashes can convert stored energy into light with different levels of efficiency, so a 600 Ws flash isn’t necessarily twice as bright as a 300 Ws flash.
This is why Ws ratings are more useful when comparing strobes within a similar category, rather than comparing every type of flash by this number alone.
For a buying decision, think of guide number as more useful for speedlights and watt-seconds as a useful reference for larger strobes. In both cases, real-world output, modifier choice, and how efficiently the light is delivered matter more than the headline number.
Note: in terms of power, battery powered and studio strobes generally start where speedlights end. Which would be around 100 Ws. Meaning that the strongest on-camera speedlights and weakest off-camera strobes have around the same power.
When Do You Need More Power?
You’ll benefit from a more powerful flash if you regularly:
- Use large modifiers
- Place your light far from your subject
- Shoot at lower ISO settings
- Use smaller apertures
- Photograph outdoors in bright sunlight
- Need fast recycling between shots
For example, a small speedlight may work perfectly when placed close to a subject with a relatively small modifier. Put that same light several meters away behind a large softbox, and you’ll need considerably more output to get the same exposure.
Don’t Buy More Power Than You Need
More power usually means a larger and heavier flash, so there’s a trade-off between output and portability.
If you mostly photograph people indoors and keep your light relatively close to your subject, a compact flash may provide all the power you need. If you want to overpower sunlight or work with large modifiers outdoors, investing in more powerful equipment makes much more sense.
The important question isn’t “What’s the most powerful flash I can afford?” It’s “How much power does my photography actually require?”

TTL vs Manual Flash
When choosing a flash, you’ll usually have the option to use TTL or manual flash. Both can produce excellent results, but they suit different shooting situations.
TTL Flash
TTL, or Through-The-Lens metering, lets your camera and flash automatically determine how much light to use for each exposure.
This is particularly useful when you’re moving around, changing your shooting distance, or photographing situations where the composition changes constantly. Events and weddings are good examples.
The main advantage is speed. You can let the camera handle the flash exposure instead of adjusting the power yourself for every frame.
The downside is consistency. The camera can change the flash output from one photograph to the next depending on what’s in the frame.
Manual Flash
With manual flash, you choose the flash power yourself.
Once you’ve found the right setting, the flash will produce the same amount of light every time. This makes manual flash particularly useful for portraits, studio work, and other controlled situations where the subject and light aren’t constantly changing.
It also gives you more predictable results when you’re building a specific lighting setup.
Which Should You Choose?
If you mostly photograph events or moving subjects, TTL can save you a lot of time.
If you primarily shoot portraits or controlled setups, manual flash is often the better choice.
Many photographers use both. There’s no reason to treat TTL and manual as competing systems. The useful feature is having the choice and knowing when to use each one.

Flash Sync Speed and High-Speed Sync
Your camera has a maximum flash sync speed at which it can normally use a flash while exposing the entire sensor at once. On many cameras, this is somewhere around 1/200 or 1/250 second, although the exact speed depends on the model.
For most everyday flash photography, this isn’t something you need to worry about much. It becomes more important when you want to use a fast shutter speed.
What Is High-Speed Sync?
High-Speed Sync (HSS) allows compatible cameras and flashes to work together at shutter speeds faster than the normal sync speed.
This can be particularly useful when photographing outdoors in bright conditions. For example, you might want to shoot a portrait at a wide aperture to get a shallow depth of field while still using flash to shape your subject.
Without HSS, you may have to close the aperture or otherwise change your exposure to stay within the camera’s normal sync speed.
HSS does have a cost: it reduces the effective power of your flash, sometimes significantly. That’s why having enough flash power becomes more important when you plan to use HSS regularly.
Do You Need HSS?
If you mostly photograph indoors or in controlled lighting, HSS may not be particularly important.
If you regularly shoot outdoor portraits in bright sunlight, especially with wide apertures, it’s a much more useful feature.
When comparing flashes, make sure HSS is supported by both the flash and your camera system. Wireless HSS also depends on the compatibility of your flash and trigger system.

Recycling Time and Battery Life
Two specifications that matter more than they might seem are recycling time and battery life.
Recycling time is how long the flash takes to recharge after firing before it’s ready to fire at the selected power again. Battery life determines how many shots you can get before the batteries need to be replaced or recharged.
Recycling Time
A fast recycling time is useful when you’re shooting quickly and continuously, particularly at higher flash powers.
If you mostly photograph carefully composed portraits, this may not matter much. But if you’re shooting events, weddings, sports, or fast-moving subjects, having to wait several seconds between flashes can become frustrating.
Keep in mind that recycling time is affected by how much power you’re using. A flash may recycle much faster at low power than at full power.
Battery Type
Most old speedlights use AA batteries, while larger flashes and newer models often use dedicated rechargeable battery packs.
AA batteries are convenient because they’re inexpensive, widely available, and easy to replace. Rechargeable packs can offer faster recycling and better performance during long sessions, while also being more convenient if you’re shooting frequently.
I definitely prefer rechargeable lithium batteries. But you should consider other factors too and decide for yourself how important battery type is.
Don’t Look at Battery Life Alone
A flash that can produce a large number of shots per charge isn’t necessarily better if it takes too long to recycle at the power you normally use.
When comparing flashes, look at both battery capacity and recycling performance. If you regularly shoot at high power, these specifications become much more important.
For occasional portrait work, you probably don’t need to optimize for either one. For long or fast-paced shoots, they can have a major impact on how smoothly you work.

Wireless Flash and Trigger Systems
If you plan to use your flash off-camera, the wireless system is one of the most important things to consider before buying.
A flash can communicate with your camera through a dedicated flash trigger, built-in radio system, or optical communication. The important thing is not necessarily which system you choose, but whether it gives you the features and flexibility you’ll need as your lighting setup grows.
Built-In Radio Systems
Many modern flashes have built-in radio receivers, allowing you to control them wirelessly from a compatible transmitter or another flash.
This is particularly convenient for off-camera photography because you don’t need a separate receiver attached to every light.
Radio systems are generally more practical than optical systems when you’re working outdoors or when there isn’t a clear line of sight between the camera and the flash.
Flash Triggers
If your flash doesn’t have a built-in transmitter, or you want more control over your lighting system, you’ll need a compatible flash trigger.
A trigger mounted on your camera sends instructions to the flash or receiver. Depending on the system, you may be able to adjust flash power, zoom, TTL, HSS, and other settings without touching the light.
This can make a significant difference once your flash is placed somewhere that’s difficult to reach.
Think About the Ecosystem
The trigger system is worth considering before you buy your first flash because it can influence what you can add later.
If you eventually want two or three flashes, different types of lights, or remote control over your entire setup, staying within a compatible wireless ecosystem can make things much simpler.
This is one reason brands such as Godox, Profoto, Westcott, Sony, Canon, and Nikon have developed their own wireless systems and compatible accessories.
You don’t necessarily need to commit to one brand forever, but it’s worth checking what other lights and triggers are available within the system before making your purchase.
Check TTL and HSS Compatibility
Wireless communication doesn’t automatically mean that every feature will work between every device.
If you want to use TTL or HSS off-camera, check that your camera, trigger, and flash all support the feature and are compatible with one another.
This is particularly important when trying to mix products from different manufacturers.
For most photographers, a reliable radio system with the features they actually use is much more valuable than a long list of extra wireless functions.

Flash Zoom and Head Movement
Some flash features sound more important on a specification sheet than they are in everyday photography. Flash zoom and head movement are useful, but they shouldn’t be the main factors driving your purchase.
Flash Zoom
Many speedlights have a zooming flash head that changes the spread of the light to match your lens’s focal length.
A wider zoom setting spreads the light over a larger area, while a longer setting concentrates it into a narrower beam. This can improve efficiency and slightly increase the effective reach of the flash.
For on-camera photography, automatic zoom linked to your lens can be convenient. For off-camera lighting, however, you may care less about it because the position, distance, and modifier usually have a much greater effect on the light.
Tilting and Swiveling
A tilting and swiveling flash head is particularly useful if you plan to use the flash on-camera.
Being able to tilt the flash upward or swivel it sideways allows you to bounce light from ceilings and walls instead of pointing the flash directly at your subject.
If you’re buying a flash primarily for off-camera use, this feature is less important because you’ll usually be controlling the direction of the light by moving the entire flash.
What Should You Prioritize?
Don’t pay a significant premium just for a wider zoom range or more flexible flash head.
For most photographers, power, compatibility, recycling time, battery system, and wireless control will have a much bigger impact on how useful the flash is.
Treat zoom and head movement as useful features rather than deciding factors.

Choosing a Flash for Your Camera System
Before buying a flash, make sure it’s designed to work with your camera system. This becomes especially important if you want TTL, HSS, or wireless control.
A flash can still fire when it isn’t fully compatible with your camera, but you may lose some of the features that make a modern flash system convenient.
Camera Brand Compatibility
Flash manufacturers often make different versions of the same type of flash for different camera systems, including Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, OM System, Panasonic/Lumix, and Pentax.
When you’re shopping, don’t just check whether the flash can physically attach to your camera. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact camera system and features you want to use.
TTL and HSS Compatibility
If you want TTL or HSS, compatibility becomes even more important.
A flash may support TTL in general but not support TTL with every camera brand. The same applies to HSS and wireless control.
This is particularly easy to overlook when buying used equipment or mixing products from different manufacturers.
Third-Party Flashes
You don’t have to buy a flash made by your camera manufacturer.
Third-party brands such as Godox, Profoto, Westcott, Neewer, and Nissin offer flashes designed to work with major camera systems. In many cases, they can also give you access to a much larger wireless lighting ecosystem.
Camera-brand flashes can still make sense if you value seamless integration with your existing system, but don’t assume that the brand on your camera has to match the brand on your flash.
Think About Your Future Setup
If you’re planning to use just one flash occasionally, basic compatibility may be all you need to worry about.
If you’re building an off-camera flash system, think further ahead. Check which triggers, additional flashes, and other lights are compatible with the system you’re considering.
Your first flash may eventually become one part of a much larger lighting setup, so choosing an ecosystem that can grow with you can save money and frustration later.

The downside is that these flashes can be relatively expensive compared with third-party alternatives.
Third-Party Flash Brands
Companies such as Godox, Profoto, Westcott, and others offer flashes and lighting equipment that work with major camera systems.
Third-party manufacturers often compete by offering more features, lower prices, or larger lighting ecosystems. Some have extensive ranges covering everything from compact speedlights to powerful studio lights.
Godox, in particular, has become popular with photographers who want to build a complete wireless lighting system without spending as much as they might with some premium alternatives.

That doesn’t mean photographs taken with these systems will automatically look better, but the equipment may make demanding professional work easier and more predictable.

A well-built flash should be able to handle regular mounting, transport, adjustments, and repeated firing without becoming a source of problems. Professional photographers may also value weather resistance and stronger physical construction when working outdoors or on location.
That doesn’t mean you need the most rugged flash available. For occasional use, spending considerably more for professional-level construction may not make much sense.
Portability vs Performance
Think about where your flash will spend most of its time.
If it will live on a light stand in your studio, size and weight probably aren’t major concerns. If you’ll carry it around the city all day for an outdoor portrait session, they become much more important.
As with power, the goal isn’t to buy the biggest or most durable flash you can afford. It’s to find the right balance between performance, portability, and reliability for the way you actually work.
What Features Actually Matter?
Flash specifications can quickly become overwhelming. Once you start comparing products, you’ll see numbers and features for almost everything. But not all of them deserve equal attention.
Features Worth Prioritizing
For most photographers, these are the specifications that matter most:
- Power: Enough output for your typical shooting conditions.
- TTL: Useful if you need automatic flash exposure.
- HSS: Important if you regularly shoot with fast shutter speeds outdoors.
- Recycling time: More important for fast-paced photography.
- Battery system: Affects shooting time, recycling, and convenience.
- Wireless control: Essential if you plan to use the flash off-camera.
- Camera compatibility: Particularly important for TTL, HSS, and wireless features.
- Build quality: More important if you shoot frequently or work in demanding conditions.
Features You Can Worry About Less
Things like an unusually wide zoom range, extra built-in effects, or small differences in specifications between otherwise similar flashes are rarely going to transform your photography.
Don’t let a long spec sheet convince you that a flash is automatically better.
The best flash is the one that provides the power, control, compatibility, and reliability you actually need.
How Much Should You Spend on a Flash?
There’s no universal price point where a flash suddenly becomes “good enough”. Flash prices vary considerably, and spending more can get you more power, better build quality, faster recycling, better batteries, or a more advanced wireless system.
But none of those things automatically make your photographs better.
Buy for Your Needs
If you’re learning off-camera flash and mostly photographing portraits indoors, you probably don’t need the most expensive professional lighting system. (And you should start by reading this guide about off-camera flash for photography.)
On the other hand, if you’re regularly photographing weddings, commercial work, or large outdoor portraits, spending more for reliability and performance can save you some frustration.
Think about the situations where your current equipment would actually limit you.
If you rarely shoot at full power, faster recycling may not matter much. If you never use TTL, paying extra for sophisticated TTL functionality may not make sense.
Don’t Forget the Rest of the System
The flash itself isn’t necessarily your only expense.
If you’re planning to use off-camera flash, you may also need a trigger, light stand, modifier, batteries, and possibly additional lights.
That’s why it’s better to think about your total lighting setup rather than spending your entire budget on the flash alone.
A reasonably priced flash that fits into a useful ecosystem can be a much better investment than an expensive flash that doesn’t suit the way you work.
Flash Buying Guide by Photographer Type
The right flash depends heavily on the type of photography you do. Here’s a simple way to narrow down your priorities.
Beginners
Look for something reasonably priced, compatible with your camera, and easy to use. TTL can be useful while you’re learning, but manual control is worth having as well.
Don’t worry about buying professional equipment immediately. A simple flash can teach you most of the fundamentals.
Speedlights that can work off camera as well, are a good start.
Portrait Photographers
Prioritize power, wireless control, battery performance, and compatibility with your preferred modifiers.
If you regularly use larger modifiers or photograph outdoors, having more power can be particularly valuable.
Event and Wedding Photographers
Prioritize TTL, recycling speed, battery life, reliability, and portability.
You’re often working quickly and can’t stop to adjust your flash power manually for every photograph. A reliable TTL system can save considerable time.
Studio Photographers
Power, consistency, recycling performance, and compatibility with your broader lighting system become more important.
Portability matters less when the equipment mostly stays in the studio.
Travel and On-Location Photographers
Size, weight, battery life, and versatility should be high on your list.
A slightly less powerful flash that you actually carry with you is more useful than a powerful one that stays at home because it’s too inconvenient to transport.
Hybrid Photo and Video Creators
If you regularly create both photographs and video, consider whether you actually need a flash.
A continuous light can work for both, while a flash is considerably more powerful for still photography. If you need both capabilities, you may eventually want both types of lighting.

As I said in the beginning of this flash buying guide, I won’t go into detail with specific models. But I cab say that throughout the past few years, I’ve use Godox strobes, models AD200pro and AD600pro to be exact. And I can recommend them personally. Both models have a newer version now. But if you can the old version cheaper, that would be my first recommendation.
There are cheaper options in the Godox lineup that can be great starts as well. As well as similar models with similar prices from Westcott that I’ve heard great things about.
If money is no object and you want the best, you can’t really go wrong with Profoto either.
